Modern Insurance
There was a time when life insurance meant that you had enough food or were confident that you could find enough food to survive the winter. Today's insurance is more sophisticated, more assuring, more encompassing and more specific. There are many kinds, such as insurance for cars, for life, for homeowner's, for renter's and for health coverage. There are more specific insurance products like business liability and trip insurance.
The most common types are car, health, life, and homeowner's or renter's.
Car insurance is mandated in the United States. That means that if you drive a car or any vehicle, it must be insured against damage to other vehicles and against medical bills. Your vehicle will have to be insured against damage if you have a loan on it. This is to cover the lender. Each state has its own rules about minimum amounts and exactly what must be covered, but you can add to any of the amounts if you feel the need to. Car insurance rates vary quite a bit, depending on the vehicle, age of the insured and many other factors.
Health insurance can be a problem because of its cost and because one can be denied if there are health problems already present. As with other insurance, the higher the risk, the higher the premiums will be. Many employers provide health insurance as part of the employment plan or as a choice an employee can make. This is a group plan which keeps premiums low. The employer will usually deduct the premium from each paycheck. This is preferable to individual plans because of the lower cost.
Other health insurance is provided by the government. Medicare is available to those who take Social Security retirement, but only after the age of 65. Most people buy additional health insurance because Medicare has a high deductible and because it doesn't cover everything a senior citizen might need.

Life insurance is usually taken out when families have young children or other dependents. There are two types.. One is term and the other is called whole. Term life insurance is the simplest. You take it out for a specific time period or until a certain age. Whole life insurance provides for one's entire life. There are many variations of each type which need to be studied thoroughly before making a decision.
Homeowner's insurance generally protects the owner of the home from various damages including total destruction. However, there are certain events that must be specifically added. For instance, flood damage is usually not automatically included. Homeowner's policies are meant to cover claims made by people who've been injured on the property, "acts of God" such as weather damage and various accidental damages both to the home and to its contents.
Renter's insurance covers the cost of replacing the contents of a rented unit, including apartments and houses in case of damage or loss. Such policies usually cover theft as well as other damages.
Loss of a home or vehicle or major health problems can cause drastic changes in one's lifestyle. Having the right insurance at the right time can be critical.
